THE MAYTAG COMPANY
923 N. CAPITOL AVE.
INDIANAPOLIS, IND.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri,

April 25th., 1927.

Dear Lillian:

Aren’t you surprised to her form me, and more than surprised to learn where I am now living. Yes, I have been living in Missouri since the first of the year.

Upon my return from Missouri last fall my husband sold out his share of his business to his partner, and the middle of October started working direct for The Maytag Company in the capacity of District Manager. His territory cover seventeen counties in southeastern Missouri.

I didn’t come out here until the first of year as my Mother and Father were celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary the last day of November and, of course, I wanted to stay for their party.

Like the country very much now that I am used to it and the trees and flowers are out, but at first thought it was the most forsaken place I ever saw. All you could see when I first arrived were negroes and mules, but now that spring has arrived everything look different, although negroes and mules still seem to predominate.

Suppose you have read in the papers about the high waters in the Mississippi valley. We weren’t hit so hard in the Cape, as most of the town is situated on a high bluff, but on down south and across the river in Illinois there is plenty of water. There are about 1000 refugees being taken care of here in the Cape. They are from across the river in Illinois and a little bit south of here in Missouri.

The eastern part of the Ozarks are in my husband’s territory and I am looking forward to spending a few days later on travelling through them.

Be sure and let me hear from you, and give my best regards to your Mother and sister.

As ever your friend,

Doris
