Dearest Herc II:--

Oh! honey! at last at last you’ve written. I didn’t know where you were—how long you intended staying in Nevada, Missouri, whether or not you rec’ the card I sent on my trip nor nothing. Tho’t probably the whole family went with you when you went West so didn’t send to Nashville. Also, here’s another excuse even if I’d known your address—Leslie nearly died. We’ve had one terrible time around here. He was operated on for fistula of the rectum—that is to say—he had an imperfect rectum—two openings instead of one. The doc said it was very simple & Les had a lot of confidence in him. It prove very simple—three hemorrhages—one lasting 6 ½ hrs. so that they nearly gave him a transfusion of blood. He’s back in the apt. now but has to be in bed a week yet.

Tell me How under the Sun you got in Caledonia & What you’re Doing.

Now when I tell you about myself you’ll die. I’m and A & P clerk—have been for three weeks. I started night school & go twice a week. Only typing, till I can afford better. The reason I clerk is because I found I fit for nothing else than housework & that’s too confining. It’s the store where we do our shopping right around the corner on Woodward. Gee, it’s fun—more than you’d think. Kids say to me, some! Comedown but what do I care.

Had a wonderful time bumming to Penna & back. We figure we covered 1300 miles. Took indirect route going down so it took us three days—we didn’t travel nights. Coming back it took two days not traveling by night.

We stayed in Altoona from Friday nite till Tuesday A.M. It rained all the time but we didn’t care. Looked up all our friends anyway when she came back e went to Else’s & shopped in Lansing (i.e. we bummed there & back) came back & finished shopping, cleaning & packing. She went—I looked a week for work & then got the A. & P. Well Dad has a pastorate at Almont, Mich. & they were just going to move the furniture form Wayties to Almont when Les became ill & Mother was called at 4 A.M. to dash here. We were up day & nite lots of times as his living was uncertain.

You don’t know how glad I am you wrote because I’d continually wonder when you would & what you were doing.

Well, I just must drop a line to Else tonite & also take a bath so you’ll excuse me if I make this short.

Now put me out of suspense by enlightening me on the subject of your happenings.
