My Dear Boy
I have just returned to tent from a two hours drill we had a lovely drill 2000 of us all lined up made a fine sight. Of course you cannot imagine how nice it looked but mama will explain to you about it. Well camp life is not any fun for your pa. I enjoy the outing but I do detest this drinking and a man is not in it if he does not get drunk every tent is nothing more than a saloon not a bit better! Beer, whiskey, gin, rum, wine, and Everything liquor will make there were lots of tents here that did not go to bed all night.
Thank heaven we have got a slick tent there is only 4 of us and not a man drinks any more than I do. We went to bed at 10.30 and got up at 5.40 not a man in our tent got out of bed and not a man even felt good from drink. It is the damdest place I ever struck I suppose a man that hasent got drunk yet is not a good soldier.
We had plenty of bedding two straw ticks two comforters and six large army blankets and 1 pair pillows we all on dressed and slept well we go to camp with out getting wet got just a little damp did not catch cold. We have plenty to eat Steak, potatoes, bread, catsup, eggs, ham, coffee, tea, ice water, so you see we will not starve. Well I’ll close hoping to hear from you by tomorrow. I remain your loving Father FJ Spinning
tell your mother to be careful and do not get sick.
